In 1799 both Elias Hasket Derby and his wife die, and their company follows soon after. Meanwhile the Crowninshield family rises in business and politics until 1815, when the Crowninshield family breaks into separate parts. Sally elopes. Geordie builds Cleopatra’s Barge and cruises the Mediterranean. John returns from being a prisoner-of-war in Halifax during the War of 1812. Benj continues serves as Secretary of the Navy. Richard tries to establish a textile factory while his sons run wild. And Nathanial Silsbee continues serves in the U.S. Senate.
